'Kueh putu or putu bambu, putu buluh or putu mangkok or puto bumbong is a traditional cylindrical-shaped steamed cake commnly found in Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippine. Putu piring is actually the Malay version of kueh tutu, how this cake is commonly called in Singapore. The putu piring is all freshly made on the spot so every packet you order is always hot. Putu piring is a round, steamed rice cake filled with gula melaka (coconut palm sugar) and served with desiccated coconut on the side. The ones from Traditional Haig Road Putu Piring come in 5 pieces per pack for S$2.50. Each piece of the rice cake is so soft, moist and fluffy. With each bite, you would get this really aromatic, caramelised flavour of gula melaka that isn’t saccharine sweet and perfectly hits the spot. The desiccated coconut gives a lovely crunch too.
