Symptoms include inflammation, pain and swelling around our joints and can be especially troublesome in body parts such as fingers, knees and our wrists. Often these symptoms are brought on by an accumulation of uric acid in the body which then triggers these unwanted symptoms. There are foods, such as those high in purines, which can make gout attacks occur more commonly and more severe. Now, lets discuss some food we will want to avoid when dealing with gout and its symptoms. 1. First, meats such as organ and glandular meats should often be avoided if we want to limit the risk of gout attacks. This includes meats such as kidney, liver and sweetbreads. This is because these meat choices are quite high in purine levels and can contribute to high blood levels of uric acid, which can make gout attacks worse and increase gout symptoms and pain. 2. When avoiding foods choices to limit gout and the unpleasant symptoms it can cause, avoiding alcoholic beverages is very important, especially during gout attacks. Studies have found the beverages such as beer and distilled liquor can increase the risk of gout and perhaps even more importantly, can increase recurring attacks in the future. Be sure to avoid alcohol between attacks and during. 3. Surprising to some, but some fish products should be avoided if you want to reduce your chances of developing gout and to limit attacks. These fish products include shellfish, anchovies, mussels, scallops and sardines. This is because these food choices are high in purine and can exacerbate gout symptoms and lead to a higher likelihood of attacks. 4. Red meat should also be avoided or limited greatly when it comes to reducing the chances of developing gout and gout attacks. You will want to limit lamb, pork and beef as these meat choices are again high in purines. Other meat choices such as bacon, venison and veal should also be avoided as they can lead to an increase in uric acid and gout. 5. Lastly, if you want to limit gout and gout attacks, along with increased levels of uric acid in the body, then you will want to avoid sugary foods and beverages as much as possible. These includes baked goods, milk chocolate and other high sugar and processed foods as this can increase the likelihood of developing gout. Sugary beverages should also be avoided as much as possible, such as soda and sweetened fruit juices. To avoid gout, foods you will want to consume as often as possible include dark green leafy vegetables, lentils, healthy nuts and seeds and fruits in moderation, especially cherries.
