'Reading food labels with an educated eye'

'Session facilitated by Dr. Snehil Dua, instructor, Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences, University of Manitoba  Through the Food and Drugs Act, Health Canada regulates food labels in Canada. In 2016, Health Canada rolled out amendments to food labelling regulation, and the industry has until Dec 14, 2021 (2022), to comply with these changes. What information is there on the labels? As consumers how can we use this information to make informed food choices? Are the nutrient and health claims on the food labels marketing gimmicks? Can the labels be misleading, and how would these new regulations make these labels more honest and transparent? These are some of the questions about food labelling that we will explore.
