'The BEST cat food brands use specific sources of meat ingredients and lots of them! Here\'s what to look for on the label. AAFCO has many rules and definitions when it comes to the cat food label. If you don\'t understand AAFCO labeling requirements, you don\'t understand what you\'re buying. WHAT TO LOOK FOR Simple food name or \"dinner, recipe, entree, platter\" etc. Specific meat ingredients Minimal amounts of synthetic additions High moisture Simple food name = \"Carnivore Duck\" = 95-100% duck 25% \"dinner\" rule = 25-94.9% of the named ingredient. Other words that fit under the 25% rule include feast, entree, platter, nuggets, formula, recipe. Avoid \"with\" and \"flavor\". Specific meat ingredients like beef, beef bone, beef liver, beef spleen, etc. are much better than \"meat by-products\". Yes, cats need vitamins and minerals. But it is much better to get these nutrients from whole food sources. Cats rely on food for moisture! Look for food that has between 70-80% moisture. If your only option is kibble or wet, WET FOOD WINS! The average cat would need to drink about 1 cup of water DAILY to make up for the low moisture in kibble.
