It is made up of 21 amino acids.  Out of these, 12 are non essential (the body can produce or synthesize them) and 9 are essential (the body cannot  produce or synthesize  them). The various functions of proteins in our body are : ·       Building and repair of muscle tissues  ·       Production of antibodies , neurotransmitters, enzymes and numerous other cellular functions.  Sedentary individuals  should strive to get around 0.8 g per Kg of their body weight.  Athletes can safely eat around 2 g  per kg of their body weight. High protein foods include Dairy, poultry, eggs, pulses amongst others.
